DOVER
The photo shows townsfolks getting ready for a Fourth of July parade along historic Blackwell Street. The main building in this photo still stands to this day being the largest square-foot building in town. The building to the right of this building was the famous Mansion House hotel that five former presidents of the United States stayed at along with Thomas Edison and a host of other famous entertainers and personalities. This hotel was razed to make way for a new modern building that does not fit in with the historic streetscape of the Blackwell Historic District.
In the photo, notice all the men were well dressed wearing hats. Al the ladies were well dressed with bonnets. All the horses were well groomed and healthy.
Babe Ruth (5th from the left) appears in Dover on October 6, 1920 along with Carl Mays and Lefty O'Doul before a crowd of over 4000 spectators who watched the Yankees play the Dover Athletic Association in an exhibition game. Disappointing the Dover crowd with no home runs that day, the "Babe" and the Yankees lost to the Dover team 3-2 in 14 innings of play.
